A Family Devotional: Living Out Micah 6:8

A Family Devotional: Living Out Micah 6:8

As a husband and dad, I’m always looking for simple ways to point my wife and kids toward God’s heart. Lately, I’ve been chewing on Micah 6:8—a verse that feels like God’s little instruction manual for life. It says:

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8, NIV)

This isn’t a long list of rules or complicated steps.

It’s three clear calls that even my kids can wrap their heads around—and honestly, I need the reminder too. Let’s break it down together:

  1. Act Justly – God loves when we do what’s right and fair. For my family, that might look like making sure everyone gets a turn to pick the movie or standing up for a friend who’s being left out. It’s asking, “How can I make things right today?”
  2. Love Mercy – This one’s about kindness—especially when it’s hard. Maybe it’s forgiving my son for spilling juice (again) or my wife and I showing grace when the kids bicker. It’s not just being nice; it’s loving to be kind.
  3. Walk Humbly with God – I picture this as holding God’s hand through life. It’s trusting Him instead of acting like I’ve got it all figured out. For us, it’s praying together, thanking Him for little things, or just being quiet and listening.

What I love about this verse is that God doesn’t ask for perfection—just a heart that beats like His.

It’s doable for my crew, whether we’re at the breakfast table or winding down at night.

A Challenge for Your Family

Here’s what we’re trying at our house: Pick one of these—acting justly, loving mercy, or walking humbly—and live it out today.

Maybe share your stories over dinner. How did it go? Did it feel natural or stretch you a bit?

Let’s Pray

“God, thank You for showing us what’s good. Help us as a family to be fair, to love kindness, and to stay close to You. Show us little ways to live this out today. Amen.”

Micah 6:8 is small enough to memorize but big enough to shape us. I’d love to hear how it lands with your family—drop a comment below!
