A Crown of Righteousness

A Crown of Righteousness

The assurance of our inheritance in heaven is a theme that resonates throughout Scripture.

As the apostle Paul writes to Timothy,

“There is laid up for me a crown of righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:8).

This verse speaks to the heart of every believer, reminding us that our salvation is secure and our eternal reward is waiting for us.

As Charles Spurgeon so eloquently puts it,

“If thou believest in the Lord Jesus, if thou hast repented of sin, if thou hast been renewed in heart, thou art one of the Lord’s people,

and there is a place reserved for thee,

a crown laid up for thee,

a harp specially provided for thee.

No one else shall have thy portion, it is reserved in heaven for thee, and thou shalt have it ere long, for there shall be no vacant thrones in glory when all the chosen are gathered in.”

Our doubts and fears often creep in, whispering to us that we may not be worthy or that we may miss out on our inheritance. But Gods word brings comfort, reminding us that our portion is secure, and

“there remaineth a rest” (Hebrews 4:9).

C.S. Lewis echoes this sentiment, writing,

“The promises of Scripture are not mere possibilities, but certainties.”

Our inheritance is not something that can be taken away from us; it is entailed, secured by the blood of Christ. As AW Tozer so aptly puts it,

“The Christian’s hope is not a vague longing for something that may or may not happen; it is a confident expectation of what God has promised.”

Watchman Nee reminds us that our salvation is not just about escaping hell but about entering into the very presence of God. He writes,

“The goal of the Christian life is not just to get to heaven but to become like Christ.”

And DL Moody adds,

“The Bible says that we are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ. What a glorious inheritance awaits us!”

As believers in Jesus Christ saved by His Grace and Faith in Him alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), let us take comfort in these words from Hebrews 6:19-20 – “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul…where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us.” May these promises reassure you today – your portion awaits you; no one else shall have your place; there remains an eternal rest prepared especially for you.

John Bunyan’s classic allegory, Pilgrim’s Progress, also speaks to this theme. The pilgrim Christian’s journey to the Celestial City represents the believer’s journey towards their eternal home. And as Christian approaches the river of death, he sees the pinnacles of the eternal city shining before him.

In Scripture, we see this theme played out in numerous passages. In 1 Peter 1:4-5, we read about an inheritance that is

“incorruptible and undefiled and that fadeth not away.”

And in Revelation 21:7-8, we see a vision of the new heaven and new earth, where believers will dwell forever with God.

And finally as Paul wrote his beloved brethren saying;

“I press toward mark because I know whom I have believed” (2 Tim 1:12),

hence having received such assurances through Gods Word lets rejoice knowing Gods finger indeed remains at work concerning each Believer sealing them until they inherit all thats been laid up according unto His Will!
