As children of the one true God, saved by His boundless grace and faith in Jesus Christ, we are reminded of the importance of living a life that reflects our newfound identity in Christ.
In Titus 3:1-8, the Apostle Paul exhorts believers to live a life of obedience, peace, and gentleness towards all, not because of our own righteousness, but because of the mercy and kindness of God our Savior.
“The greatest glory of the gospel is, that it is a gospel of free mercy, and that it is freely preached to the very vilest of men.” (Spurgeon, “The Guilt of Unbelief”)
We were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, and enslaved by our passions and pleasures, living in malice and envy towards others (Titus 3:3). But when the kindness and love of God appeared, He saved us, not because of our own righteousness, but because of His mercy (Titus 3:4-5).
This salvation is not a result of our own efforts, but a gift of God, poured out generously through Jesus Christ our Savior (Titus 3:6).
“The cross is the symbol of the creative suffering of God, and it is in the cross that we find the ultimate meaning of the Christian faith.” (Tozer, “The Pursuit of God”)
This salvation brings about a transformation in our lives, where we are justified by His grace and become heirs of eternal life (Titus 3:7).
“The greatest need of the world is the need for a spiritual awakening, and this can only be met by the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ.” (Moody, “The Way to God”)
As believers, we are called to devote ourselves to doing what is good, not because of our own strength, but because of the empowering work of the Holy Spirit in our lives (Titus 3:8).
“The Christian life is not a life of striving, but a life of surrender; not a life of effort, but a life of faith.” (Nee, “The Normal Christian Life”)
“The gospel is not a list of prohibitions, but a positive and glorious revelation of the divine plan of salvation.” (Lewis, “Mere Christianity”)
As we reflect on the transforming power of God’s mercy and grace, let us remember the exhortation of Titus 3:1-8, and strive to live a life that honors our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
